Modeling Fine-Scale Cetaceans’ Distributions in Oceanic Islands: Madeira Archipelago as a Case Study

چکیده

Species distributional estimates are an essential tool to improve and implement effective conservation management measures. Nevertheless, obtaining accurate remains a challenge in many cases, especially when looking at the marine environment, mainly due species mobility habitat dynamism. Ecosystems surrounding oceanic islands highly dynamic constitute key actor on pelagic habitats, congregating biodiversity their vicinity. The main objective of this study was obtain fine-scale spatio-temporal cetaceans islands, such as Madeira archipelago, using long-term opportunistically collected dataset. Ecological Niche Models (ENM) were built cetacean occurrence data on-board commercial whale watching activities environmental from 2003 2018 for 10 with diverse range associations. two different datasets variables temporal spatial resolutions comparison purposes. State-of-the-art techniques used iterate, build evaluate MAXENT models constructed. opportunistic dataset successfully described distribution patterns throughout area considered. Final produce grids average standard deviation suitability monthly estimates. Results provide first (both dimension) archipelago reveal seasonal/annual patterns, thus providing novel insights ecology quantitative better actions.

Rapid forest carbon assessments of oceanic islands: a case study of the Hawaiian archipelago

BACKGROUND Spatially explicit forest carbon (C) monitoring aids conservation and climate change mitigation efforts, yet few approaches have been developed specifically for the highly heterogeneous landscapes of oceanic island chains that continue to undergo rapid and extensive forest C change. We developed an approach for rapid mapping of aboveground C density (ACD; units = Mg or metric tons C ...

Investigating the multifractality of point precipitation in the Madeira archipelago

The purpose of this work is to contribute to a better understanding of the variability of precipitation in the Madeira archipelago. This archipelago is located in the Atlantic subtropical belt under the direct influence of the Azores high pressure system. It is formed by Madeira Island (728 km2) and Porto Santo Island (42 km2) and by two other groups of very small inhabited islands. The complex...

The ethnopharmacology of Madeira and Porto Santo Islands, a review.

The ethnopharmacology of Madeira and Porto Santo Islands is extremely interesting because of the cultural and biogeographic features of this region, which make it a centre of medicinal plant diversity (richness of endemic flora, geographical isolation in the Atlantic sea, crosscultural influences, and past abundance of local healers). The medicinal flora of Madeira is composed of 259 species. S...
